UPDATE: Emergency services beefing up for Isla Vista's Halloween weekend street party

Mike Eliason/SBC

A crowd estimated to be in the range of 30,000 people is expected this weekend for Halloween in Isla Vista.

In anticipation of the large street party, the Santa Barbara County Fire Department is boosting its staffing level by 25 personnel.

The resources will remain in place through the weekend. A temporary trauma tent will be set up to treat people and additional ambulances will be on standby as well.

Residents of Isla Vista, mostly made up of UCSB and Santa Barbara City College students, have been vocal about their desire to keep outsiders from attending this year's celebrations.

Santa Barbara County says based on crowd control problems in recent years, more than 300 officers and deputies will be deployed in Isla Vista with California Highway Patrol conducting sobriety checkpoints.

Alcohol and Beverage Control agents will monitor Isla Vista and Goleta for sales of alcohol to minors.

The Sheriff's Department will perform sweeps of Goleta hotels to check for underage drinking and there will be zero tolerance enforcement in place with no warnings.

In addition, the city of Goleta now has temporary parking restrictions in place for neighborhoods adjacent to Isla Vista to reduce the number of out-of-towners taking part in the events.

The spring celebration known as Deltopia got out of hand earlier this year when rioting began on the streets of Isla Vista. Previous Halloween celebrations in the community have also seen large numbers of people arrested and taken to the hospital.
