Officials in California are hoping Labor Day boaters will help keep invasive quagga and zebra mussels in check this Labor Day holiday weekend.

“Californians have a unique opportunity to enjoy numerous natural resources,” said California Department of Fish and Wildlife Director Charlton H. Bonham. “Doing your part to clean, drain and dry before heading out to recreate will help keep them free of quagga and zebra mussels, as well as other invasive species.”

Boating at Cachuma Lake was closed Saturday while the Sheriff’s Dive Team searched for a missing 22-year-old man who was last seen going underwater Friday night, just before 8:00 p.m.

The search was suspended Saturday afternoon because of poor underwater viability, but Santa Barbara County park rangers will continue to do surface patrols of the area.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department said in a media release that divers reached a depth of 80 feet under zero visibility conditions.
