Several Cal Poly faculty members and students picketed on campus in front of the President's Administration building Thursday morning.

They voiced concerns over the number of administrators hired in recent years at the rally. Dr. Belinda Morril is a temporary lecturer and serves as the Academic Senate Representative for part-time faculty. She said that something needs to change.

"We had people there who have been here for 30 years. They're ready to retire. They're not going to get anything out of this, other than to say...this is not the 'Mustang Way,' " said Morril.

Statistics show the most Americans are extremely lazy when it comes to creating secure, unique passwords. According to SplashData's annual list for 2014, these are the five most popular passwords found on the Internet:

  1. 12345
  2. password
  3. 12345678
  4. qwerty
  5. abc123

Easy-to-break passwords like these—and many other variations—are a weak link in your overall web security.

Meet your local college and university presidents

In the fall of 2014, KCBX News interviewed nearly every leader of the colleges and universities on the Central Coast. Our goal was to hear their visions for the campuses, find out what's new and on the horizon, and discover how they plan to deal with ongoing challenges.

The presidents of (from north to south) Hartnell, Cuesta, Cal Poly, Allan Hancock, and Santa Barbara City College all participated in our interview series.

Use the interactive map to hear each one. We were unsuccessful in our efforts to book an interview with UC Santa Barbara's Chancellor Yang.

Cal Poly faculty members can expect a boost in salary, according to a letter sent out Thursday by President Jeffery Armstrong.

In it, he says $2.5 million will go into salary adjustments over the next several years. This includes $500,000 this fiscal year, followed by $1 million next year.

More than 500 Cal Poly students, staff and faculty members turned out for a community forum Thursday to address, what is perceived by many to be, an out-of-control party culture connected to the university.

The forum was scheduled this week, following last Saturday morning's roof collapse incident during the annual St. Fratty's Day party. Several students were hurt during the collapse, but none seriously.

Cal Poly's Greek system could be penalized following Saturday's roof collapse that injured several people, according to University spokesman Matt Lazier.

The incident happened during an annual early morning party known as Saint Fratty's Day, and appears to be the result of too many people standing on the structure.

Fraternities and sororities were placed on social probation back in January as modifications to party management policies were considered.

A large research project aimed at finding better ways to grow strawberries has some of those test berries showing up in the produce departments at local stores.

The Strawberry Sustainability Research and Education Center at Cal Poly is working on alternatives to the previous industry standard for soil fumigation called methyl bromide. The chemical is being phased out in California, so Central Coast berry growers are looking for viable alternatives, including the option of using no fumigants at all.

The investigations are over in the cases of two Cal Poly dorm buildings that were evacuated in late January after students reported uncontrollable coughing.

The two incidents occurred within a week of each other. The first case was reported in Santa Lucia Hall on Jan.25  and the second in Fremont Hall on Jan. 31.

Ernie Paez is a Division Chief with the Office of the State Fire Marshall and says during both incidents the hazmat teams did what they were trained to do. They took a reading of the air using their monitors, but didn't find anything.
