Why aren’t there more people of color and women at agriculture conferences? One organization is actively working to change the demographics of both presenters and attendees—and workshop topics—at what's considered the oldest and largest organic farming conference in the West.

Cal Poly’s College of Liberal Arts hosted its fourth 'Inclusion Starts with Me' forum this week. The daylong event featured a series of talks and workshops by faculty, staff and students centered around equity and social justice, part of a broader campaign at the state university in San Luis Obispo to reposition itself as diverse and inclusive.

New holiday banners have gone up around downtown San Luis Obispo, part of a city beautification effort to highlight diversity in the community and raise cultural awareness.

Created in 2011 as a response to a widely reported incident involving a cross burning in Arroyo Grande the Diversity Coalition of San Luis Obispo County believes the strength and success of our community and nation, is based on honoring our diversity. Their vision is to promote positive human understanding and behavior, through charitable, scientific and educational efforts, of the equality of gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, physical and mental abilities and attributes, as well as all other characteristics comprising individual identities.

Diversity and inclusion have been ongoing issues at San Luis Obispo's California Polytechnic State University, long before a series of racist incidents in 2018 highlighted the need for more racial awareness on the campus. In January, at Cal Poly’s second annual Martin Luther King Jr. dinner—featuring a keynote dialogue with American philosopher, political activist and social critic Cornel West—Camille O'Bryant was named the inaugural recipient of the campus' Martin Luther King Legacy Award for her effors in advocating for underrepresented students.  O'Bryant has taught at Cal Poly for over two decades and is an associate dean in the College of Science and Mathematics.
