Every Fourth of July, the Carnegie Corporation of New York releases a list of "Great Immigrants," people the philanthropic organization says have made notable contributions to the "progress of American society." This year’s list includes singer Regina Spektor, actor Kumail Nanjiani, the CEO of Uber, a UC Santa Barbara Nobel Prize winner in physics, and U.S. Congressman Salud Carbajal.

In late April, the Trump administration announced a new executive order that directs the Interior Department to review the designations of certain national monuments, like the Carrizo Plain National Monument in southeastern San Luis Obispo County.

On Friday, President Trump signed an executive order to expand offshore oil and gas drilling in federal waters and the outer continental shelf. It calls for a review of current five-year plan for oil and gas leases, and directs the secretary of the interior to establish a streamlined permitting process.

Students at Cal Poly and University of California, Santa Barbara marched out of classes and through their campus in the rain today in response to Donald Trump's inauguration as U.S. president.

The two men who represent the Central Coast in Washington DC said Tuesday they plan to attend Friday’s presidential inauguration. But only out of respect for the office, not the man assuming it.

Some Central Coast residents are gearing up for a trip to Sacramento. A growing movement is organizing rallies at state capitols on Monday, December 19 in the hours before the Electoral College is scheduled to vote for the next president and vice-president. The demonstrators hope to persuade electors from casting their ballot for Donald Trump and Mike Pence.
