UPDATE: Friday, July 31, 2015

The 16-year-old boy accused of human trafficking in San Luis Obispo County this week will be tried as an adult. District Attorney Dan Dow says it's at his discretion to have Nikko Anaya of Manteca face adult charges and can do so under Proposition 21, which was approved by voters in 2000.

Investigators say the 15-year-old victim—a girl from Manteca—was sold for sex acts over the course of a week in Santa Cruz, Pismo Beach, and San Luis Obispo.

Three other adults are also facing charges as part of this trafficking case.

Fighting human trafficking on the Central Coast

San Luis Obispo County is the halfway point between Los Angeles and San Francisco making it a primary spot for human trafficking within the state. The FBI recently named California a primary destination for human trafficking. Reporter Jordan Bell speaks with Assistant District Attorney, Lee Cunningham, Director of the Victim/Witness Unit, Debbie Vallely and Rebecca Turner with Mountainbrook Community Church about their organizations' efforts to combat human trafficking in the county.

What is human trafficking? This serious offense carries no simple answer to that question. This problem, inherent in almost every country across the globe, is multifaceted and complex and its victims are increasing in numbers.  The human trafficking industry globally earns an expected $32 billion every year. And California is no stranger to these crimes.
