A San Luis Obispo County judge handed down a steep sentence Wednesday: an Indiana man was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder of his mother in Grover Beach. It’s the harshest sentence imposed in the county in several years.

Law enforcement officials say they have solved a pair of 41-year-old San Luis Obispo County cold cases by identifying a suspect in two Atascadero murders with the assistance of DNA evidence. The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office announced Wednesday they consider the now-deceased Arthur Rudy Martinez as the killer of 30-year-old Jane Morton Antunez and 28-year-old Patricia Dwyer in the late 1970s.

A 39-year-old Santa Barbara man was in custody Wednesday evening as the primary suspect in the death of a 39-year-old woman who appeared to be teh victim of a domestic violence violence attack.

Investigators say the victim in this crime died of injuries she received during the assault.

The suspect and the victim were not married but did have a daughter together who was present during the violent act. Police say the girl was physically unharmed and is now being taken care of by Child Welfare Services.

Santa Barbara County investigators are working to figure out who killed a person whose body was found Tuesday morning near the entrance to Guadalupe Beach.

"The victim was determined to be deceased and the death is considered to be a homicide," a report sent to media outlets by the sheriff's office Tuesday afternoon stated.

The department said that a group of field workers found the body "of a heavy-set Hispanic person, on the side of the road, face down in the dirt" just before 7 a.m.

That person was identified as 37-year-old Javier Alcantar Limon of Santa Maria.

UPDATE: August 13, 2014 at 5:21 p.m.

The Santa Barbara County man accused of killing his parents and two young boys Monday night made his first appearance in court Wednesday afternoon, but did not enter a plea.

A continuance was granted in the case against 45-year-old Nicolas Holzer at the hearing.

District Attorney Joyce Dudley announced the charges against Holzer Wednesday morning, saying he faces four murder counts and one count of felony animal cruelty. 

A patient at Atascadero State Hospital (ASH) was being held Thursday night at the San Luis Obispo County Jail on suspicion of murder following the death of a fellow patient Wednesday afternoon.

Yet another patient was being held in isolation at the hospital while an investigation continued into his role in the attack, if any.

California's Department of State Hospitals says the critically injured man was found after staff received a call for help. The victim was taken to the urgent care center at ASH where he was pronounced dead around 3:01 p.m., Wednesday.

UPDATE: May 26, 2014 at 5:36 p.m.  

Seven people are dead, including the suspected gunman, and several people are still recovering from injuries following a series of shootings and stabbings in Isla Vista on Friday night. One of the hospitalized victims was still in serious condition as of Saturday.

Investigators believe 22-year-old Elliot Rodger, a Santa Barbara City College student from Woodland Hills who was living in Isla Vista, started his killing spree by stabbing to death his two roommates and a third man.
