urgency ordinance

If any renters in San Luis Obispo recently received an eviction notice, it could possibly be unlawful. City officials have passed an emergency tenant protection ordinance seeking to prevent unjust evictions and unreasonable rent hikes. About 65 percent of San Luis Obispo residents are renters.

The local law took effect immediately after the city council passed it on November 26. According to the city manager, the council found the issue acute enough to only require one hearing to pass the ordinance.

The city of Paso Robles is going back to the drawing board when it comes to regulating short-term rentals. The city council passed an urgency ordinance earlier in February to address growing noise and parking complaints, but this week the council had to repeal that ordinance due to a conflict of interest.

A main focus at Tuesday’s San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors meeting will concern groundwater basins and alleged violations of state law by some of the supervisors.

The allegations stem from the March 7 board meeting during which - without any prior public notice or discussion - Supervisor Arnold made a motion for the county to become the agency responsible for managing the area's groundwater basins. Supervisors Peschong and Compton’s supporting votes passed the motion that significantly changed policy.
