Recent burn areas could see flooding during week's storms on Central Coast

Flickr member: Patrick Berry

A series of storms are hitting the Central Coast this week, which means we could see flooding.

The National Weather Service said Central Coast residents, especially those near recently burned areas, should prepare for those potential floods.

Local agencies and the Weather Service are collaborating to monitor those areas burned by summer and recent fires.

Ron Alsop, Emergency Services Manager with the San Luis Obispo County Office of Emergency Services, said areas like those affected by the Cuesta and Park Hill fires could see flash flooding.

"There's going to be some low-lying flooding, possible debris flows, but no major flooding," said Alsop. "Nonetheless, in San Luis Obispo County and Northern Santa Barbara County, it doesn't take much rain to have localized flooding and also, of course, with the tree mortality because of the drought, the number of trees is going to come down. The Weather Service is warning of possible tree damage after Tuesday's rains."

Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties are providing sand for bagging, as well as many cities this week.

In almost all cases, residents need to provide their own bags.
