Celebrated conductor Kent Nagano grew up in Morro Bay in the 1950s and '60s. Nagano returned home this week to lead a benefit concert designed to raise money for the Cerrito Peak Project in Morro Bay.

Nagano speaks with KCBX News' Greta Mart about the Morro Bay of his youth and how his cosmopolitan neighbors inspired a lifetime of success in the classical music world.

Nagano is conducting a concert of classical music to benefit the Morro Bay Open Space Alliance's “Save Cerrito Peak” campaign.

According to the Morro Bay Open Space Alliance, "for this special event, Maestro Nagano will serve as master of ceremonies for his daughter Karin Kei Nagano." Karin Nagano has issued two recordings on the Analekta label and is currently studying at Yale University. She will will perform classical piano pieces by Messiaen, Debussy and Schubert.

The concert takes place at 7 pm on Friday, June 8 at Saint Timothy’s Catholic Church in Morro Bay.
