Santa Barbara County's Animal Services is rewriting its ordinance on dogs and owners rights and responsibilities.
The Public Health Department has already drafted the proposed changes to the existing ordinance and is holding two meetings this week to hear public feedback.
The changes include picking up after a pet that defecates in public, keeping the area where a pet is housed clean, and drawing great attention, a revamping of the rules surrounding dangerous dogs.
Animal Services Director Jan Glick says the current ordinance hasn't been updated in about 15 years and only allows for euthanization of a dog deemed to be dangerous.
"What we are doing is expanding the definitions to potentially dangerous or vicious dogs," says Glick. "There will be two definitions and there will be more latitude for an option other than euthanizing the animals if it falls into one of those two categories."
