Cost of Living in SLO County

Broadcast date: 7/31/2014

A special report recently released by ACTION for Healthy Communities highlights a disturbing trend in San Luis Obispo County. Although the cost of living is comparatively high to other areas in the state, over the years incomes in the county have dropped when factored for inflation. The report finds this rising cost of living, combined with slightly lower salaries and higher than average housing prices can make living on the Central Coast a challenge, particularly for sole provider households and low income families. The report suggests that affording a living in the county has become increasingly difficult, especially for single families, when a full 60% of all jobs pay less than the recommended living wage of $27.11 per hour.

Host Fred Munroe is joined by guests Bryn Smith with CAPSLO, Dr. Ryan Alaniz, Assistant Professor of Sociology at Cal Poly, and Kenneth Trigueiro, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer with Peoples’ Self-Help Housing to discuss how this high cost of living affects residents of San Luis Obispo, and what our community can do to help improve the quality of life for those who call the Central Coast home.

Central Coast Voices is sponsored by ACTION for Healthy Communities in collaboration with KCBX.

Fred Munroe is a co-host of the KCBX talk show Central Coast Voices, heard every Thursday afternoon from 1:00-2:00. Fred has successfully divided his time as a local entrepreneur, political leader, and communicator.
