Central Coast Voices: Are you a distracted driver?

Broadcast date: 1/25/2018

Distracted driving has become a serious problem facing not just todays drivers, but also bicycle riders and pedestrians as well. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that in 2015 alone, 3,477 people were killed, and 391,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers. While anything that takes your attention away from driving can be a distraction, studies show that texting while driving is especially dangerous. Sending or reading a text message takes your eyes off the road for about 5 seconds, long enough to cover a football field while driving at 55 mph. And its sobering to know that at any given time during the day in the U.S. approximately 660,000 drivers are using cell phones or other electronic devices while driving (NHTSA).

Join Fred Munroe as he speaks with guests Karen Aydelott, Retired Executive Director with San Luis Obispo YMCA, World Class Triathlete and Board Member Bike SLO County and Mike Bennett, Retired Marine Corp Officer and Aviator, and Executive Director Bike SLO County, as well as Managing Director with the Central Coast Distracted Driving Awareness Partnership as they discuss what distracted driving is and what we can do to make our roadways safer.
