Central Coast Voices: Young people are speaking, are we going to listen?

Broadcast date: 3/15/2018

Just over a month ago, 17 innocent people, high school students and staff, at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, were gunned down and killed by a lone gunman, a former student at the school.  Dozens more were injured.

We may have lost count of how many senseless shootings there have been, and how long this has been going on, but an ongoing Washington Post analysis has found that more than 150,000 students attending at least 170 primary or secondary schools have experienced a shooting on campus since the Columbine High School massacre in 1999. And despite this epidemic in gun violence we currently face in the U.S., little has been done by lawmakers on a national level to safeguard young lives.

But now youth are saying “enough”-- and they are speaking out and standing up for their rights, demanding action by staging school walk outs, and preparing for marches against gun violence throughout the nation on Saturday, March 24th.

Join Fred Munroe as he speaks to two of these students, Keanu LyDay, Student Organizer and student at New Tech High School in Nipomo, and Alexa Ford, Student Organizer and student at Morro Bay High School, as well as an adult they have enlisted to assist them be heard, Dawn Addis with Women’s March SLO as they discuss why they were motivated to organize the March for Our Lives in San Luis Obispo on Saturday, March 24th to support the victims and survivors of the Parkland massacre, as well as all victims of school and mass shootings, and it’s purpose.

Central Coast Voices is sponsored by ACTION for Healthy Communities in collaboration with KCBX and made possible through underwriting by Joan Gellert-Sargen.

Fred Munroe is a co-host of the KCBX talk show Central Coast Voices, heard every Thursday afternoon from 1:00-2:00.
