Central Coast Voices: Struggling to stay afloat

Broadcast date: 10/4/18

One in three households in California, over 3.3 million families—including those with income well above the Federal Poverty Level—struggle every month to meet basic needs. This is just one of the many findings published in "Struggling to Stay Afloat: The Real Cost Measure in California 2018," the new statewide report released by the United Way of California.

The report takes an in depth look at the financial challenges for working families in California by dissecting groups based on neighborhood, race/ethnicity, household type, education, and citizenship. Unlike the official poverty measure, which does not accurately account for local costs of living, the Real Cost Measure factors in the costs of housing, food, healthcare, childcare, transportation and other basic needs to determine what it really costs to live in California. Join host Fred Munroe as he speaks with Rick London, CEO with the United Way of San Luis Obispo County, and the director of program and policy development with the United Ways of California, Henry Gascon, as they dive into this report.

Central Coast Voices is sponsored by ACTION for Healthy Communities in collaboration with KCBX and made possible through underwriting by Joan Gellert-Sargen.
