The California Highway Patrol says its investigation could take months to find out why a FedEx big rig crossed I-5's center divide, hitting a bus full of high school seniors.
Ten people are dead including the drivers of the bus and truck, five students and three chaperones. The charter was headed north from Los Angeles to visit the Humboldt State University campus. It was rented through Silverado Stages, based in San Luis Obispo.
The company currently operates from terminals in San Luis Obispo, Sacramento, Santa Barbara, Long Beach, Pomona and Santa Ana.
"Our top priority is making sure that the injured are being cared for," Silverado Stages said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured, their families and everyone affected by this accident."
California State University Chancellor Timothy White says the students were participating in a decades-old program that brings prospective urban college students to Humboldt State.
