Genesis Space Capsule Crashes to Earth
The Genesis space capsule crashes into the Utah desert after its parachutes fail to deploy. The probe carried billions of particles of solar wind that NASA had hoped held clues to the origins of the universe. It's not clear whether the samples were destroyed. Hear NPR's Howard Berkes.

New York, Washington Note Sept. 11 Anniversary
New York City marks the third anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks with moments of silence at ground zero and a light show at sunset. In Virginia, bells toll at the Pentagon for the 184 people killed there. Hear NPR's Luke Burbank.
Car Bomb Kills at Least 47 in Baghdad
At least 47 people are killed and scores more injured when a car bomb explodes in a crowded Baghdad marketplace. Elsewhere, 11 Iraqi policemen and their driver are killed in a drive-by shooting, and saboteurs blow up an oil pipeline. Hear NPR's Peter Kenyon.
Militants Attack American Consulate in Saudi Arabia
Nine people are killed in an attack by Islamic militants on the U.S. consulate in Jiddah, Saudi Arabia. No Americans were killed in the three-hour assault, described by eyewitnesses as highly organized in its execution. Hear Roger Harrison of Arab News.
