South Dakota moves closer to sparking a national debate over Roe v. Wade. Gov. Mike Rounds says he's inclined to sign a sweeping ban on abortion that has already passed the state legislature. It's aimed at forcing a Supreme Court challenge to Roe.
Hamas Ends Truce, Cites Fatal Israeli Shelling
Militants aligned with Hamas fire homemade rockets at Israel, ending a truce agreed to 16 months ago. Seven Palestinian civilians died Friday when an Israeli artillery round hit a Gaza beach. Israel says the shell went astray, and is investigating.
Centrist Kadima Party to Lead Israeli Government
Acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert declares victory for his centrist Kadima party in Israel's parliamentary elections. Kadima won 28 seats in the 120-member parliament. Olmert says he'd prefer a peace deal with Palestinians, but is ready to act unilaterally to define Israel's final borders.

Lobbyist Abramoff Sentenced to Nearly Six Years
Former lobbyist Jack Abramoff and his former business partner, Adam Kidan, are sentenced to five years and 10 months each after admitting to fraud in a Florida gambling scheme. The sentences could be reduced as both men cooperate with other government investigations.

Bush Sending Rice Back to Mideast for Talks
President Bush is sending Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice back to the Middle East on Saturday to continue working for an end to the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. Bush made the announcement at the White House during a joint news conference with British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, the longest-serving leader in postwar Italy, resigns to make way for a center-left government led by Romano Prodi. Berlusconi, leader of a conservative faction that took power in 2001, had refused to concede defeat in the nation's April elections.

The Food and Drug Administration is moving toward a compromise on the emergency contraception pill. The announcement came a day before a Capitol Hill hearing on the nomination of a new FDA commissioner.

Prosecutors want Moussaoui to get the death penalty for his role in the attacks. The defense will try to show that Moussaoui deserves a life sentence.
