In an address to the U.N. General Assembly, President Bush defends the U.S. decision to go war in Iraq and warns that the move toward Iraqi self-government will take time. Bush asks for greater international assistance in stabilizing Iraq. U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan and others criticize the U.S. decision to go war without the U.N. Security Council's approval. Hear NPR's Vicky O'Hara and Lionel Barber of the Financial Times.

Helicopter Shot Down in Iraq, 15 U.S. Soldiers Dead
Fifteen American soldiers are dead and 21 wounded after a Chinook helicopter is apparently attacked near Fallujah, Iraq. It is the deadliest single strike against U.S. forces since the war began. NPR's Peter Kenyon reports from the scene of the crash, and NPR's Eric Westervelt reports from the Pentagon on how weapons such as shoulder-fired rockets are easy to come by.
The Anger Management Industry
Anger management is a thriving industry in the United States. It is the subject of hundreds of books, workshops and videos. And yet, as NPR's Robert Siegel discovers, there are no national criteria, no oversight and no evaluation of the efficacy of these programs.

Defense Dept. Announces Planned Troop Levels
The Pentagon announces details of its troop rotation plan for Iraq, calling for reducing the U.S. force there from the current 131,600 to 105,000 by May 2004. The plan would send 85,000 soldiers and Marines to Iraq early next year to relieve troops completing one-year tours, with supplemental support likely to come from reserves. U.S. Military Eyes Eastern European Bases
The U.S. military will soon use bases in Romania and Bulgaria to train and stage forces for quick reaction to potential trouble spots in the Mideast and elsewhere. It would be the first in a series of moves to establish more rapid-reaction forces on smaller bases around the world -- part of the biggest military realignment since the end of the Cold War. Hear NPR's Eric Westervelt.

Shiite Factor Adds to Worries over Iraqi Resistance
A U.S. soldier is shot and critically wounded in Baghdad, the latest in a wave of attacks by Iraqi gunmen opposed to the U.S.-British occupation. This week's attacks against British soldiers in southern Iraq raise fears that unrest may be spreading beyond Sunni Muslims -- who largely supported ousted leader Saddam Hussein -- to the country's Shia majority. Hear NPR's Kate Seelye.
