  • Tuesday afternoon, the Department of National Intelligence released a four-page summary of the main findings of a report by U.S. intelligence agencies on the vulnerability of America to terrorist attack -- and how the war in Iraq affects the effort to fight terrorism.
  • The Senate Armed Services Committee votes unanimously to approve Robert Gates as the new secretary of defense. In his sole day of hearings, Gates faced questions about Iraq and U.S. troop levels. The full Senate will vote on his nomination Wednesday.
  • National Guard Cpl. Joe Raicaldo is home from Iraq with things he didn't have when he left: an honorable discharge, metal rods and screws up and down his spine, and an arm that moves like a robot's. He's also homeless, living in his car. There are at least 600 recent vets who are homeless.
  • A federal grand jury charges a Mississippi man in the 1964 killings of two black men in one of the few remaining unsolved cases from the civil rights era. James Ford Seale pleaded not guilty today in Jackson, Miss. Seale, a former sheriff's deputy, is believed to have been a Klansman.
  • The first Catholic priest to be elected to Congress has died. Father Robert Drinan was a Vietnam War critic who served for 10 years in the House, until Pope John Paul II ordered him to chose between Congress and the priesthood. Drinan was 86.
  • In testimony Monday, former White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said that former White House aide Lewis Libby spoke of CIA operative Valerie Plame before the date that Libby had told investigators. Libby is accused of perjury in the outing of Plame, the wife of a prominent war critic.
  • Michele Norris talks with Marita Golden about author Bebe Moore Campbell. Campbell died today of complications from brain cancer at her home in Los Angeles. She was 56. In addition to being an author, Campbell was an NPR commentator and an advocate for the mentally ill. She is survived by her mother, husband, daughter and two grandchildren.
  • Is America ready to elect a woman president? A majority of voters say yes. But for a woman, a presidential campaign could be filled with minefields. Michele Norris hears about those challenges from former Rep. Pat Schroeder, who considered a run for the White House in 1988.
  • In a press conference Thursday, Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards announced that he will continue his bid for the nomination, despite the news that his wife's cancer has relapsed.
  • Idaho Republican Sen. Larry Craig said Thursday that he intends to keep his seat until his term ends 15 months from now. A Minnesota judge on Thursday rejected Craig's bid to withdraw his guilty plea to misdemeanor disorderly conduct stemming from his arrest in a Minneapolis airport bathroom.
