Every two years, United Ways of California conducts a Real Cost Measure Report by using census bureau information to tell the true cost of living in California.
Liz Summer is the CEO of United Ways of San Luis Obispo County. She says nearly 31% percent of households in SLO County are falling short of meeting day-to-day living expenses.
“With a household, for example, that has a median income of around $95,000 a year and it's made up of two adults and two children, they're falling short of being able to make ends meet,” said Summer.
Summer says, as California is etching out the budget for the next fiscal year, lawmakers need to take a closer look at the reality Californians are facing.
Meanwhile, CalFresh may have to absorb around $3 billion out of $300 billion in federal cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP.
