Honoring Our Ancestors: Dia de Los Muertos

Honoring Our Ancestors: Dia de Los Muertos

With traditional stories, music and dance, and performances by Danza Azteca Tonantzin Arroyo Grande, Ballet Folklórico Corazón de la Costa, Ballet Folklórico de Sacramento and Mariachi Mexicanismo, this special Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) event celebrates and honors our ancestors through the exploration of Latin American culture and traditions.

Latin American culture is a vibrant tapestry woven from the threads of pre-Columbian civilizations, European colonization, and the struggle for independence. Indigenous cultures, like the Aztecs, flourished before European arrival. The Spanish and Portuguese conquered the region, leading to the establishment of vast colonial empires and the mixing of indigenous, European, and African cultures. In the early 19th century, revolutions swept through Latin America, establishing independent nations. Stories, music and dance reflect this history, the blend of diverse cultures, and the spirit of the people, our ancestors, remembered and honored by this event.

This event benefits the work of the Promotores Collaborative of San Luis Obispo’s whose mission is to build, foster, and support a network of “Promotores” – trained community health workers. A program of the Center for Family Strengthening, Promotores envisions sustainable, comprehensive access to healthcare and services among all members of the community.
