Group urges SLO to reject downtown bowling alley project

City of San Luis Obispo

A local group is pushing for the City of San Luis Obispo to reject a project that would bring a bowling alley to the city's downtown core.

The group Save Our Downtown is concerned about the project's potential noise impacts. James Lopes is with the organization. He says the noise from the bowling alley itself and the bars inside the venue could affect neighboring places like the Wineman Building, which houses many people near the proposed site. The group is also very concerned about the project adding to the existing businesses offering alcohol.

"We're asking the city to deny the application and favor some mix of retail and dining that is not intrusive to the area and really promotes more of the beneficial retail and livability aspects of downtown," said Lopes.

Jeremy Pemberton is Managing Partner of Discovery Venues, the group proposing the project. He says he believes the group's concerns result from a lack of understanding of the permitting and design process. He says many places like this across the nation have faced similar concerns.

"Yet, they have been able to successfully design and operate their facility to mitigate those impacts. With today's technology and advances in material design?, sound is not an issue," said Pemberton.

The City Council hearing will be held in mid-September.
