Central Coast Voices: Civility in Public Discourse

Broadcast date: 6/28/2018

A number of recent polls have shown that Americans believe tone and civility in politics are getting worse. The Institute for Civility in Government defines Civility as “claiming and caring for one’s identity, needs and beliefs without degrading someone else’s in the process.”  They argue that civility is more than just politeness, but it is the hard work of staying present even with those with whom we have deep-rooted and fierce disagreements. Civility is an important prerequisite for civic action.

Last week political leaders throughout San Luis Obispo signed a code of civility. The code is meant to promote communication and is to be a first step in an effort working together toward a more regional approach to governing the county.

Join host Fred Munroe as he speaks with elected officials in San Luis Obispo County, including Morro Bay Mayor Jamie Irons and Paso Robles Mayor Steve Martin, as they discuss how promoting civility can enable better communication and therefore benefit the county as a whole.

Central Coast Voices is sponsored by ACTION for Healthy Communities in collaboration with KCBX and made possible through underwriting by Joan Gellert-Sargen.

Fred Munroe is a co-host of the KCBX talk show Central Coast Voices, heard every Thursday afternoon from 1:00-2:00. Fred has successfully divided his time as a local entrepreneur, political leader, and communicator. He owns and manages two local firms addressing personal travel planning and public transportation; Travel With Fred and Ridership Development Consultants.
