Santa Barbara police engaged in a standoff Tuesday with a suspect barricaded in an apartment building off South Turnpike Road in Santa Barbara. The area was evacuated and Highway 101 closed in both directions between Turnpike Road and Patterson Avenue. San Marcos High School, located across the street from the apartment building, was placed in lockdown for the afternoon, but just after 3 p.m., the students were sent home.
UPDATE 05/08/19 The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office announced the suspect, Francisco Anthony Alcaraz Jr., 32, was found dead in the apartment, and that it is investigating the case as an officer-involved shooting.
At 5:35 p.m., the county's sheriff's office said those who live in the Positano and Camino de Vida Apartments can return home, with the exeption "of the units located immediately adjacent to the unit where [the] suspect was located." Those residents are being directed to the Red Cross shelter located at the Goleta Community Center on Hollister Avenue in Goleta.
According to Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Kelly Hoover, Santa Barbara Police officers went to an apartment building on Camino De Vida Tuesday in early Tuesday afternoon to serve a search warrant. A suspect fired shots. No one was injured, and police set up a perimeter around the apartment and evacuated the immediate area. The suspect refused to come out, said Hoover, and a SWAT team attempted to communicate with the suspect. The incident ended around 4 p.m. and the highway reopened.
