SLO County mental health worker charged with falsifying medical records linked to patient death

A 19-year-old patient at the SLO County Crisis Stabilization Unit died on-site in 2024. The facility later closed down due to lack of use, according to County Behavioral health.

A San Luis Obispo County mental health worker is facing charges for falsifying medical records tied to a patient who died at the County Crisis Stabilization Unit last year.

The District Attorney has filed 10 misdemeanor charges against licensed psychiatric technician Janet Marie Brown. She worked at the CSU last May, when a 19-year-old died from fentanyl poisoning less than 24 hours after being admitted.

Brown is accused of making five separate entries falsely in the decedent's medical files during their time at the facility.

County District Attorney Dan Dow said he wants to make one thing clear:

“The actions that we have charged are just the allegation that false entries were made, or inaccurate entries were made, in the decedent's medical record, and so there's not a causal link from that action and any harm to the decedent,” Dow said.

If convicted on all counts, Brown could face up to three years in County jail.

A County attorney told KCBX the County is fully cooperating with the case– and clarified that Brown was an employee for Sierra Mental Wellness Group, not the County.

Sierra Mental Wellness Group did not respond to a request for comment.

Brown was arraigned May 21. Dow said the case could take several months to a year to resolve– either through a plea deal or a trial.
