End of the road for California's Field Poll

A Field Poll from 1997, reporting Californian public opinion of President Clinton.

The poll that gauged the opinions of Californians on political and social issues for nearly 70 years will cease operations next year. The director of the Field Poll announced today that the company will no longer release the non-partisan poll, which was founded in 1947 by Mervin Field.

The survey group puts out about 50 reports each year. It's funded in part by California newspapers and tv stations, who in turn get first rights to publish poll results.

Kim Nalder is professor of government at California State University Sacramento, and said the Field Poll has been the premiere poll in California.

“It’s sort of interesting in this political climate how different California is from the rest of the country and with Field doing regular polling we had an opportunity to really look at that. And it won't be as comprehensively done with them gone,” Nalder said.

The Field Poll's parent company, HAVAS Advertising, has decided to discontinue all activities related to the Field Poll, but Field Research will continue to conduct surveys for private and public businesses.
