Dealing with Diablo Canyon's nuclear waste

Randol White/KCBX
Diablo Canyon is California's last operating nuclear power plant.

On Wednesday, March 13, the Diablo Canyon Decommissioning Engagement Panel is hosting a public hearing on the management—over the coming decades—of the spent, radioactive nuclear fuel generated at Diablo Canyon Power Plant. The hearing will take place in board chambers at the downtown SLO government center at 1055 Monterey Street from 6 to 10 p.m. The hearing will also be aired on the SLO-SPANnetwork.

Former NRC judge calls for better oversight of Diablo Canyon decommissioning:

Before retiring in 2015, San Luis Obispo resident Alex Karlin was a judge for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, or the NRC, the federal regulatory body for commercial nuclear power plants. Karlin now sits on the Diablo Canyon Decommissioning Engagement Panel, which was created and appointed by plant owner PG&E.  Karlin and the county of San Luis Obispo, among others, are calling for an independent panel overseeing the decommissioning process. In a recent studio interview we'll be airing in two parts, Karlin also speaks about a number of issues surrounding the planned closure of Diablo Canyon—from spent fuel storage to what will happen to the pristine acreage around the facility owned by the now-bankrupt PG&E. Part 1 aired on KCBX News' Issues & Ideas on February 11, 2019.

Part 2 of this conversation aired on the March 11, 2019 episode of Issues & Ideas.
