A project aimed at bringing more affordable housing into the City of San Luis Obispo is moving forward after closing escrow on the land last week.
It's referred to as the Ironworks Project on Broad Street, and it's the first mixed-use design for the city's housing authority (HASLO).
Ironworks calls for an infill development on a 1.6 acre site with apartments for those making 18,000 to 50,000 a year. It will also have about 10,000 square feet of commercial space.
HASLO Executive Director Scott Smith said Friday that the project has now reached a point where his team is moving quickly.
"We expect to start construction by the end of the year," said Smith. "And then, people moving in, we'd expect that to be probably a 14 month—or maybe an 18 moth—schedule in order to build it."
Smith said a big chunk of that time will be spent waiting for the building permit, an estimated six months.
