Libraries will have longer hours in San Luis Obispo County

San Luis Obispo County

You will soon have more available hours to visit your local public library in San Luis Obispo County.

Currently all 15 branches are closed on Mondays, but that will change starting in July, when Arroyo Grande,  Atascadero, and Cayucos add Monday hours to their schedules.

Hours will also increase at the system's other locations on various days, and it's all being done without any increase in budget, according to Chris Barnickel, the county library director.

"There's been some misinformation that we received some windfall in our budget and went back and increased our budget through the county and we haven't done that," said Barnickel. "We've just looked at staffing efficiencies, and ways to make things happen, and through out vacancy factor have been able to increase our hours available to the public."

The director says the total increase in hours comes out to an average of about 20 percent at each branch, simply by rearranging the schedules of library staff.
