Isla Vista, UCSB beaches shut down for the weekend

The beaches adjacent to UCSB and Isla Vista will be closed this Saturday and Sunday for the fifth straight year as the county prepares for the annual college spring fling known as Deltopia.

The Santa Barbara County Services Department said the beach closures are in anticipation of a "Floatopia" event, with the goal of preventing a re-occurance of what happened back in 2009.

"This large scale event with thousands of participants had no provision for the health and well being of the public, including no facilities for human sanitation or refuse collection," said Paddy Langlands, Parks Division Deputy Director in a letter to media outlets. "The Floatopia event planned for April 5, 2014 is not a sanctioned event and there are no approved permits issued.

The beaches have been closed each year for this event since 2010. It's up to the sheriff's department to enforce the closure.

Nearby Goleta Beach County Park and Santa Barbara Shores County Park are not affected by the closures.
