Atascadero farmers' market returns to downtown

The weekly Atascadero farmers’ market is permanently returning to downtown. It’s been 14 years since the 2003 San Simeon earthquake forced the market’s relocation, after the closure of the quake-damaged historic City Hall building.

“Because of all of the restoration that had to take place for city hall, obviously the city hall employees had to move out and relocate and all of that,” Deputy City Manager Terrie Banish said. “Which created a lull, if you will, for the farmers and it just wasn’t a great location at that point.”

So the Wednesday afternoon market - operated by the North County Farmers Markets Association - moved to a few different spots over the years, mostly recently in the parking lot of the El Camino Real Plaza Shopping Center.

To celebrate the market’s return to downtown’s Sunken Gardens Park, the city is throwing a party.

“We’ll have a big grand opening around that, ribbon cutting, that kind of thing,” Banish said. “We’ll spring into fresh produce, as we’re saying, so it’ll be a lot of fun and a good time to move.”

The market and party will take place April 5, from 3 to 6 p.m.
