Bankruptcy judge rules Central Coast Haggen stores can be sold

Jordan Bell, KCBX News

The company that owns the Haggen grocery stores along the Central Coast received permission this week to sell off the properties as part of its bankruptcy proceedings.

A  judge with the United States Bankruptcy Court in Delaware ruled Tuesday that sales can commence for 100 store locations, including those in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties.

Southern California-based Smart & Final has placed a bid to buy several of the stores on the Central Coast. Haggen says those sales will begin Friday, October 23, 2015.

Phase two of the sell-off includes another 67 stores, with the closing sales beginning on October 30, 2015.

Haggen rapidly expanded this past spring into California, Arizona and Nevada, but struggled to make a go of it.
