A small plane crashed Friday morning on the San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport runway, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. No injuries were reported but all flights have been delayed or diverted until at least 5 p.m. Friday.
According to CalFire, the aircraft caught fire, prompting an emergency response and the deployment of a hazardous materials team to clean up about 90 gallons of spilled fuel.
Although two people were aboard the plane, no injuries or fatalities were reported.
“They got out of the aircraft on their own accord and declined medical treatment and safely walked away.” said airport spokesperson Courtney Pene.
Emergency crews quickly extinguished the fire, and the FAA is now investigating the incident. Officials say no further details will be released until the investigation is complete.
Airport operations remain suspended until the runway is cleared and deemed safe. Pene acknowledged the disruption caused by the incident.
“We thank passengers and the community for their patience because we realize it's a busy holiday weekend, and this really did kind of throw people for a loop,” she said.
Airport staff are continuing to work closely with first responders and federal agencies to understand what caused the crash.
