Cal Poly Fall Concert: Symphony and the Big Band
Cal Poly Fall Concert: Symphony and the Big Band
The program will explore the intersection of symphonic and jazz traditions: Dmitri Shostakovich’s “Waltz No. 2” from “Suite for Jazz Orchestra No. 2”; “Cinco Salsa,” a salsa version of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 arranged by Sverre Indris Joner; Antônio Carlos Jobim’s “Wave,” a bossa nova for jazz band, flutes and strings; Claude Debussy’s “Arabesque” as arranged by Jack Matthias and recorded by Harry James; Bert Ligon’s “Bookends”; Duke Ellington’s “Three Black Kings” with Ana Nelson, tenor saxophone soloist; “A Walk to Remember” by University Jazz Band Director Jamaal Baptiste; and George Gershwin’s “An American in Paris” which was used in the same-titled 1951 film for a dance sequence featuring Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron. The symphony is directed by David Arrivée.
