Music Department faculty members will be featured in a showcase recital as part of Cal Poly’s Mustang Family Weekend. It will include instrumental applied faculty who are recognized across the region for their expertise in solo and chamber ensemble performance.
—New faculty member and Los Angeles-based flutist Jennifer Jo will make her Cal Poly debut with pianist Idona Cabrinha in a performance Astor Piazzolla’s “Night Club 1960” from “Histoire du Tango.” —Violinists Emily Lanzone and Grace Seng will play a movement from Sergey Prokofiev’s “Sonata for Two Violins,” Op. 56—Pianist Janet Joichi will perform two movements from Frédéric Chopin’s “Piano Sonata No. 2 in B-flat Minor,” Op. 35—Christopher J. Woodruff, trumpet, and Stephen Nutt, tuba, will play a movement from Eugene Anderson’s “Baroque 'N Brass.”

This highly-anticipated event will showcase seven regional high school marching bands performing their competition field shows in front of a panel of judges. An award ceremony will follow the performances. Residents of all communities are invited to attend this family-friendly event.
Competing this year will be the Righetti Warrior Band, Arroyo Grande High School Band and Color Guard, Paso Robles High School Band and Color Guard, Orcutt Academy Marching Band, and the Templeton Talon Marching Band. The San Luis Obispo High School Tiger Band will perform an exhibition show.
The ROAR is presented by the San Luis Obispo Instrumental Music Boosters Association, and all proceeds will go toward supporting the San Luis Obispo High School bands.
Gates will open to spectators at 5:15 pm. Tickets are $10. $5 for children ages 5 to 12. Children under 5 are free.

Disney Concerts and AMP Worldwide present Disney’s Moana Live-to-Film Concert North American tour, featuring a full-length screening of the beloved movie accompanied by live performances of a unique on-stage musical ensemble of top Hollywood studio musicians, Polynesian rhythm masters and vocalists, all celebrating the music and songs of this award-winning Walt Disney Animation Studios classic.

The Fall Jazz Concert will feature performances by Cal Poly’s Vocal Jazz Ensemble, University Jazz Band and four Jazz Combos.
The Vocal Jazz Ensemble will perform “Look for the Silver Lining” by Jerome Kern, “Sugar” by Stanley Turrentine, and Kirby Shaw’s arrangement of Erroll Garner’s “Misty.” The Jazz Combos will perform a mix of standards and original student arrangements, plus Latin works including Alberto Domínguez’ “Frenesí,” and an arrangement by Poncho Sanchez and Mongo Santamaría of Herbie Hancock’s “Watermelon Man.” The University Jazz Band will play Frank Foster’s “Shiny Stockings” — one of the iconic pieces from the Count Basie Orchestra’s body of works — plus selections by Rob McConnell, Melba Liston and Tom Kubis.
Jamaal Baptiste directs the big band and vocal ensemble, and Dylan Johnson directs the combos.
