Central Coast Voices: Central Coast Water Resources

Broadcast date: 5/31/2018

In February, a U.S. Drought Monitor reported the majority of San Luis Obispo County was experiencing severe drought conditions. While March rain storms lifted parts of the county out of a severe drought, experts agree that all communities on the Central Coast need to be evaluating how they will make themselves more drought resilient. So what shape are our water resources in? And how can we make our County more drought resilient?

A proposed Cloud Seeding program might help. Cloud Seeding is a method to increase rainfall potential for convection bands (storm weather patterns) that come through our area. The potential increase in rainfall could be about 10-20%, which is significant. While Cloud Seeding is not a single solution to solve the water crisis, it could be a good option to enhance our water supply.

Join Fred Munroe as he speaks with Ray Dienzo, Supervising Water Resources Engineer, County of SLO Public Works, Keith Miller, Environmental Resource Specialist, County of SLO Public Works and Aaron Floyd, Utilities Deputy Director for the City of San Luis Obispo as they discuss water resource management on the Central Coast and a proposed Cloud Seeding program and how it could help as we prepare for another year of drought.

Central Coast Voices is sponsored by ACTION for Healthy Communities in collaboration with KCBX and made possible through underwriting by Joan Gellert-Sargen.

Fred Munroe is a co-host of the KCBX talk show Central Coast Voices, heard every Thursday afternoon from 1:00-2:00.
