Cal Poly releases options for University's 20 year Master Plan

University leaders are sharing new plans for how to deal with an expanding Cal Poly over the next 20 years.

They are considering two versions for a Master Plan.

One continues with the quarter system, using an expanded campus. The other would use increased summer enrollment to handle more students.

Linda Dalton is the interim university planning officer

"We would not grow as much during the academic year because we have capacity in the summer," said Dalton.  "Essentially we would move some of the enrollment that occurred during fall winter and spring into the summer months."

Under both options, the university plans to build more dorms.

The goal is to house all freshmen and sophomore students, and 30 percent of juniors and seniors. Dalton said some construction could start soon using donor money, but the rest is tentative.

In addition, Cal Poly is considering the north end of campus for the majority of development, away from existing city neighborhoods. One concept is the creation of a creek-side village near Brizzolara Creek on the north side of campus, which would serve as a hub of student life and campus activity.

The university said in a statement that it encourages additional community engagement in this process and invites anyone who is interested to attend the following open house forums:

  • May 7, 2015 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Robert E. Kennedy Library Atrium on Cal Poly’s campus
  • May 9, 2015 from 10 a.m. to noon at the San Luis Obispo City?County Library, 995 Palm St.
