Hank Hadley, KCBX

As travelers head into the Labor Day holiday weekend this year, gas prices are among the lowest seen for this period since 2010, nationally.

The national average according to AAA's Daily Fuel Gauge Report is $3.43 for a gallon of regular unleaded.

Metro areas in California however sit about where they did at this same time last year, with an average price of $3.85.

On the always fuel pricey Central Coast, travelers will find higher than the state average rates as usual. Here's the breakdown:

  • $3.89 - Salinas
  • $3.97 - San Luis Obispo/Paso Robles
  • $3.89 - Santa Barbara

Only San Francisco comes in with a higher average price than San Luis Obispo, at an even $4.00.
The lowest priced gas in the nation can be found in Greenville, South Carolina at $3.14 a gallon.
