Cholame brush fire closes eastern end of Hwy. 41

Cal Fire SLO
Burned acreage near Cholame on Monday.

A wildfire ignited Monday afternoon near Cholame, east of Paso Robles, burning on both sides of Highway 41, according to CalFire. The blaze, known as the Olive Fire, has burned 150 acres as of Monday evening.

Highway 41 was closed for several hours in both directions just east of the turn-off to Highway 46 near Cholame. Officials say no structures were threatened, including a nearby solar power plant.

This fire is not to be confused with another 2017 fire, also named the Olive Fire, which burned 130 acres near Cholame back in May. CalFire’s Chris Elms says fires are usually named for the area in which they start – a geographical location or local landmark. In this case, Elms says there was really nothing around the area except an olive grove in both fires. CalFire has no plans to change the name of Monday's blaze.

Just before 5 p.m., CalFire tweeted, "Forward spread has been stopped. Crews will be working on hot spots and containment for several hours."

At 8 p.m., CalFire announced the fire had been 100 percent contained, with 251 total acres burned.
