California wildfires: How you can help

Many California wildfire relief organizations are requesting monetary donations instead of items.

In response to the deadly fires that have burned through hundreds of thousands of acres and displaced thousands across California, organizations around the state are providing relief to the victims of these fires. Many are requesting monetary donations rather than items. Here are some of the ways you can help:

  • The ASI Student Government at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo is collecting new items for fire victims that can be dropped off at the student government office, located on the second floor of the University Union building through Thursday, November 15 at 3 p.m. Meathead Movers will then deliver donations to a variety of locations in need.
  • The American Red Crossis accepting donations on their website. You can also donate by calling 1-800-REDCROSS or texting "CAWILDFIRES" to 90999 to make an automatic $10 donation.
  • GoFundMe has a list of verified campaigns that are dedicated to California fire relief.
  • The California Community Foundation’s Wildfire Relief Fund supports intermediate and long-term recovery efforts for major California wildfires. You can donate online or mail checks noting “Wildfire Relief Fund” to California Community Foundation, 221 S. Figueroa St., Suite 400, Los Angeles, CA 90012.
  • North Valley Community Foundation is accepting online donations to an Evacuation Relief Fund to help shelter Camp Fire evacuees.
  • The United Way of Northern California has created a NorCal Fire Relief Fund to benefit Camp Fire relief efforts. To donate, visit online or text “BUTTEFIRE” to 91999.
  • The United Way of Greater Los Angeles and United Way of Ventura County have partnered to create a fund for fire victims in Southern California. You can donate online or text "UWVC" to 41444.
  • The Boys and Girls Club of Malibu is working with California Senator Henry Stern to provide aid and donations to residents of Malibu and the equestrian community through the Malibu Fire Relief. Donate online.

Many animals have been displaced or injured during the fires. Here are some ways to help:

  • The Butte Humane Societyhas opened a pet food and supply pantry at 2580 Fair Street in Chico, open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. To donate and find more information visit their Facebook page.
  • In Southern California, the LA County Animal Care Foundation is helping to rescue animals from the fires through the Noah's Legacy Fund. Donate online and specify the Noah's Legacy Fund, or send donations to P.O. Box 100515, Pasadena, CA 91189-0515.
