IRS gives Santa Barbara County disaster victims extra time to file

Before a system outage hit the Internal Revenue Service Tuesday morning, the deadline for filing federal taxes was April 17 at midnight. Now the deadline has been postponed until midnight April 18 for most taxpayers. But Santa Barbara County residents and businesses qualify for a further extension from the IRS.

As a result of a presidential disaster declaration due to the Thomas Fire in December 2017 and January 9, 2018 debris flow in Montecito, the IRS has pushed back certain deadlines for affected taxpayers in Santa Barbara County. The new deadline is April 30.

IRS officials say they have already identified taxpayers located in the covered disaster area, and applied automatic filing and payment relief. Any residents or business owners who receive a late filing or incorrect penalty notice are asked to call the IRS disaster hotline at 1-866-562-5227.
