Santa Barbara Police plan crackdown on skateboarders in the downtown core

The City of Santa Barbara says complaints are coming in by the hundreds over skateboarders who hit pedestrians on sidewalks or cause traffic problems in the streets.

As a result, the city's police officers will start cracking down on those who violate the rules within the downtown corridor.

The Santa Barbara Police Department says skateboarding is not a crime and is allowed on the vast majority of city sidewalks, parkways, and at a free beachfront skate park.

However, in the downtown core skateboarding is prohibited on the public streets and on sidewalks, walkways and other pedestrian areas maintained by the city.

The department says officers are hoping this will be more of an educational campaign than one of issuing citations and fines.
