Land Conservancy to protect more SLO County land this year

Kaila Dettman

Last year the Land Conservancy of San Luis Obispo took ownership of the 900-acre parcel of land now known as the Pismo Preserve and this year they hope to open it to the public.

The organization raised more than $12 million last year to buy the land and make improvements, plus it finalized all the paperwork to switch it over to public use. Executive Director, KailaDettman says the Pismo Preserve is the beginning of a larger, county-wide effort, the Heart and Soil campaign.

Dettman says they plan on working towards opening the Octagon Barn Center as a community gathering place, and work on a large number of conservation easement projects.

"We enter into volunteering agreements with local family farms, ranches and other land owners to protect very important land in our county and we have about 20-thousand acres in the queue, and we could potentially protect 10-thousand acres just this year alone," said Dettman.

They hope to open the Pismo Preserve to the public by the end of 2015.
