The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Coroner’s Office is investigating the death of a University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB) student whose body was found Sunday morning on the beach in Isla Vista.

The victim has been identified as 20-year-old Sierra Markee-Winkler of Eureka, who was attending UCSB and lived in Isla Vista.

Around 7:00 a.m., a bicyclist discovered Markee-Winkler on the shore below the 6800 block of Del Playa Drive and called 9-1-1, the sheriff's department said.

Isla Vista Foot Patrol and Santa Barbara County Fire Department personnel responded and determined the young woman was dead.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the circumstances surrounding her death. The exact cause and manner of death will not be determined for several weeks and is pending a coroner’s investigation.

Investigators are asking anyone who has information on this case to contact the Isla Vista Foot Patrol at 805-681-4179.
