Isla Vista bluffs are being lined with orange safety fencing

Paddy Langlands, SB County staff

Orange mesh safety fencing is going up along the cliffs in Isla Vista, as Santa Barbara County officials search for a better option to keep residents and visitors safe.

It began going up Wednesday at Pelican and Pescadero Parks along the bluffs. The installation should be complete by next week, according to the county.

"This temporary fence is being put in as a safety measure, especially as we expect more people to come to the Isla Vista area for graduation celebrations," said Santa Barbara County spokesperson Renée Bahl. "We're looking for a permanent solution to put in something that both keeps people safe and is more aesthetically pleasing."

The Isla Vista bluffs have had a long history of incidents where people have either died or been seriously hurt in falls. Just last month, a woman's body was found on the beach below one of the cliffs, but no official cause of death has been released.
