Back on Saturday, August 9, a cyclist was killed on Foxen Canyon Road in the Santa Maria Valley after he was hit by a truck driven by a 16-year-old.
Matthew O'Neill was a PhD student at UC Santa Barbara and avid cyclist. He was 33 years old at the time of the crash.
The California Highway Patrol has confirmed the driver of the truck was accompanied by 18-year-old, Nicholas Maldonado, son of Santa Maria Republican politician, Abel Maldonado. They have not however released the name of the minor behind wheel, but Santa Barbara Independent News Editor Tyler Hayden says the boy is another Maldonado—the brother of Nicholas, and son of Abel—in an article published Wednesday.
