About 48 million people in the U.S. get sick from foodborne disease every year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Two years ago, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo professors developed a training program for local growers of leafy greens like lettuce, cabbage and spinach.

Santa Barbara County opened its long-awaited Northern Branch Jail in Santa Maria in January, following a long history of litigation and controversy at the county’s 50-year-old Main Jail. Educating nurses could help to meet increasing future needs on the Central Coast, but it’s not a simple solution. Cal Poly professor, Katya Cengel lived in and reported from Ukraine, an experience she chronicles in her 2019 memoir From Chernobyl With Love.
