As part of a plan to increase affordable housing, this week San Luis Obispo County officials took some first steps: passing higher development fees on new homes and streamlining the environmental permitting process in an effort to get homes built faster. Not everyone was happy about it, but did agree the county needs more housing stock.

The San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to delay approval to build an anaerobic digester -- which would turn methane emitted from composted food into energy to power homes in the area.

There will soon be a new source of water to fight wildfires on the Central Coast. The San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved Tuesday a contract with PG&E to purchase desalinated water produced out at Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant.

Supervisor Adam Hill says the plant only uses about 40 percent of its production capacity, so some of that excess water can now be used in CAL FIRE tanker trucks.

Another candidate is adding her name to the 2016 race for San Luis Obispo County's District 3 Supervisor Seat, which includes portions of San Luis Obispo, Edna Valley, Avila Beach and the Five Cities.

Pismo Beach Mayor Shelly Higginbotham, who just won re-election back in November by a very close margin, announced Monday her decision to run. She now joins San Luis Obispo City Council Member Dan Carpenter and former Grover Beach Mayor Debbie Peterson in their efforts to unseat Adam Hill.

Hill has served the district since 2009.

A political race in San Luis Obispo County is heating up well ahead of the 2016 General Election.

The District 3 Supervisor Seat, currently held by Adam Hill, has at least three people running for it, including the incumbent. The area includes the beach cities of Pismo and Grover, more than half of the City of San Luis Obispo, and the communities of Edna Valley and Avila.

Supervisor Adam Hill has held the seat since 2008 and says he plans to be on the ballot in November 2016 for a third term.

UPDATE: August 28, 2014 at 6:12 p.m.

It's now official, funds to buy 900 acres of land above Pismo Beach to form a public space area known at the Pismo Preserve have been secured, according to The Land Conservancy of San Luis Obispo County.

The organization says it got word from the State of California on Thursday that an expected donation of $4 million came through.

The Conservancy's Kaila Dettman told KCBX Thursday afternoon that escrow proceedings have begun on the property. The process could be complete in early-to-mid September.
