Journeys of Discovery: Exploring Carmel-by-the-Sea

The village of Carmel-by-the-Sea is just one square mile, but within its bounds there’s more than 50 family-owned restaurants, 45 inns and even more art galleries. The town is distinctive for its storybook architecture and its fondness for dogs.

Doris Day started the nationwide trend of doggy-friendly hotels when she purchased the Cypress Inn back in the mid-1970s. When Clint Eastwood became mayor of Carmel in 1989, he made national headlines by overturning the law prohibiting consumption of ice cream cones on city sidewalks. Join correspondent Tom Wilmer as he discovers Carmel’s distinctive history, its fragile ecosystem, and numerous allures by visiting with Carrie Theis, who serves on the city council and owns the historic Hofhas House inn.
